Product Description

Long before it became a visually striking herbal tea, the deep blue flower of Clitoria ternatea was quietly woven into traditional food and wellness practices across South and Southeast Asia. For centuries, its vivid blue flowers have been valued in traditional systems of knowledge, particularly in Ayurveda and Southeast Asian folk practices. In classical Ayurvedic texts, the plant is known as Aparajita and is described as a medhya herb, traditionally associated with supporting memory, clarity and mental calm. In many parts of Asia, butterfly pea flowers were also used as a natural food colorant for rice dishes and sweets reflecting their long standing role in everyday life. Butterfly pea is a perennial climbing plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. It grows as a slender vine that twines around supports and produces solitary, showy flowers with an intense deep-blue hue, sometimes edged with white or yellow. The flowers are delicate yet resilient and are harvested by hand when fully open. When dried, they retain much of their color and are easily rehydrated, making them well suited for herbal infusions and culinary applications where visual appeal is as important as flavor. The flowers are rich in unique phytochemicals, most notably anthocyanins known as ternatins, which are responsible for the plant’s characteristic blue color. These compounds exhibit strong antioxidant properties and display a natural pH-sensitive color change, shifting from blue to purple or pink when combined with acidic ingredients. Butterfly pea flowers also contain flavonol glycosides, peptides and small amounts of volatile compounds that contribute to their functional profile. Precautionary measures: Butterfly pea flower is widely consumed as a food ingredient and herbal infusion and is generally considered safe in moderate amounts. However, due to limited clinical data on concentrated or long-term use, pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should exercise caution. As with all botanicals, moderation and responsible use are recommended, particularly for those with underlying health conditions.
