Product Description

Curry leaves have held a familiar place in many South Asian kitchens for generations, valued not for heat or colour but for the fresh, pleasant aroma they release when added to warm oil. Their use is deeply woven into everyday cooking, and the leaves are often plucked straight from small homegrown plants. Over time, their popularity spread from the Indian subcontinent to neighbouring regions, carried by travellers, traders and the movement of culinary traditions. The curry leaf plant, Murraya koenigii, is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree belonging to the Rutaceae family. It grows well in warm climates with moderate rainfall and can be found both in cultivated fields and as a common backyard plant. The tree has slender branches filled with rows of small, glossy, dark green leaflets arranged along a central stalk. These leaflets are what we call curry leaves. The plant also produces small white flowers that later turn into purplish-black berries, though the leaves remain the main harvested part. Leaves are usually handpicked, cleaned and dried or used fresh depending on the requirement. Curry leaves contain natural aromatic oils that contribute to their characteristic fragrance. The essential oil includes compounds such as β-caryophyllene and other volatile components that give the leaves their distinct identity in cooking. Along with these aromatic substances, the leaves contain fibre, chlorophyll, natural moisture and other plant constituents that make up their overall structure. They are typically used in tempering, where a few leaves are heated in oil to release their aroma before adding other ingredients. Precautionary measures: Individual sensitivity may vary, and regular use should be guided by personal preference or professional advice.
