Long before the advent of synthetic detergents, soapnut fruits were used in households and traditional practices as a gentle, plant-based cleanser for fabrics, hair and skin. Historical references in Ayurveda and regional folk traditions describe their use not only for washing but also for maintaining hygiene and supporting scalp health. Native to the Indian subcontinent, the tree remains an integral part of rural economies and traditional lifestyles. Sapindus mukorossi is a large, deciduous tree belonging to the Sapindaceae family and typically grows to a height of 10–15 meters, with some mature trees reaching up to 20 meters. It has a broad canopy and pinnate leaves, producing small greenish-white flowers that develop into round, fleshy fruits. When ripe, the fruits turn golden brown and become rich in natural saponins. After harvesting, the outer fruit shells are separated from the seeds and dried; these shells are the primary material used in cleansing and traditional applications. The functional value of soapnut fruits lies in their high saponin content. Saponins are naturally occurring glycosides that produce a mild lather when mixed with water, giving soapnuts their cleansing action. In addition to saponins, the fruits contain sugars, fatty acids and small amounts of phenolic compounds, contributing to their mild antimicrobial and surfactant properties. This composition makes soapnuts suitable for use as a natural alternative to synthetic cleaning agents. Soapnut fruits are intended primarily for external use and household applications. Internal consumption is not recommended. Contact with eyes should be avoided, and care should be taken when used on sensitive skin.
