Product Description

Plant Profile Cassia angustifolia (also classified as Senna alexandrina), commonly known as Indian Senna, is a small, perennial shrub characterized by its upright stems and pinnate leaves comprising four to eight pairs of lanceolate, grayish-green leaflets. Belonging to the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) family, the plant produces bright yellow flowers and flat, oblong pods. The plant is highly valued for its sennosides, which are hydroxyanthracene glycosides traditionally used as natural laxatives. C. angustifolia thrives in hot, arid climates and is indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula and Somalia. However, it has been extensively naturalized and cultivated in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the well-drained, sandy soils of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. Healthcare Perspective In traditional and modern healthcare systems, Cassia angustifolia (widely known as Senna or Swarnapatri) is primarily utilized for its stimulant laxative properties. In the Ayurvedic tradition, it is classified as a Virechana (purgative) herb intended to balance Pitta and Vata doshas; it is historically included in formulations with the aim of addressing chronic constipation, abdominal distention, and the clearance of ama (metabolic toxins). Within modern regulatory frameworks, Senna is categorized as a non-prescription drug for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It is also standardly utilized in clinical settings for bowel preparation prior to diagnostic procedures, such as colonoscopies, to ensure adequate evacuation. Phytochemical Composition The chemical profile of Cassia angustifolia is primarily defined by a group of anthraquinone glycosides known as sennosides A and B, which serve as the dominant active constituents found in both the leaves and pods. These compounds function as prodrugs; upon reaching the large intestine, they are hydrolyzed and reduced by gut microbiota into active rhein-anthrones, which stimulate colonic motility. In addition to these primary sennosides, the plant contains minor glycosides such as sennosides C and D, as well as free anthraquinones including rhein, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol. The phytochemical matrix is further enriched by flavonoids, such as kaempferol and isorhamnetin. Other supporting constituents include mucilage, which provides a soothing effect on the digestive mucosa, and small amounts of volatile oils containing terpenes and aldehydes.
