Product Description

Plant Profile Bixa orellana, commonly referred to as the "lipstick tree," is an evergreen perennial shrub or small tree that generally matures to a height between 2 and 10 meters. Its morphology is characterized by cordate, or heart-shaped, leaves and aesthetically pleasing clusters of star-shaped flowers that range in color from soft pink to white. The most distinctive feature of the species is its spiky, reddish-brown fruit capsules. These capsules, which bear a visual resemblance to the rambutan fruit, eventually dehisce (split open) to reveal a dense collection of small, pigment-rich seeds. While native to the tropics of the Americas, the species has become widely naturalized across global subtropical zones. In India, where it is known as Sinduri, the plant is both cultivated for its aesthetic value and found growing wild in diverse climates. Healthcare Perspective From an Ayurvedic perspective, Bixa orellana is often characterized by its Katu (pungent) and Ushna (warming) attributes, which are traditionally thought to assist in balancing the Kapha and Vata doshas. Within these traditional frameworks, the plant is frequently described as having astringent and mild purgative qualities. In regional practices across Southern India, practitioners have historically prepared seed pastes—often blended with coconut oil—as a topical application intended to soothe minor skin irritations and support the management of superficial wounds or dermatitis. Furthermore, the vibrant red pigment found in the seeds, rich in the apocarotenoid bixin, is utilized beyond its role as a food colorant; it is frequently cited in folk medicine for its antioxidant properties and its traditional use in topical preparations aimed at shielding the skin from environmental stressors. Phytochemical Composition The seeds of Bixa orellana serve as a concentrated botanical reservoir for various bioactive compounds, particularly those responsible for its intense pigmentation. The dominant constituent is bixin, a fat-soluble apocarotenoid that can represent up to 80% of the total carotenoid content found in the seed’s waxy coating. This is accompanied by its water-soluble derivative, norbixin, which is valued for its chemical stability and antioxidant potential. A notable aspect of its chemical profile is that the seeds are considered one of nature's most significant sources of tocotrienols (a potent form of Vitamin E), specifically the delta and gamma isomers. Interestingly, the plant contains negligible amounts of tocopherols, creating a ratio that is quite rare within the plant kingdom. The profile is further supplemented by a high concentration of geranylgeraniol, an important precursor in various biosynthetic pathways. Comprehensive phytochemical screenings also highlight a complex array of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids (such as apigenin and luteolin), tannins, alkaloids, and phenolic acids like gallic and ellagic acid.
